In May 2015, current Cyprus Track and Field Head Coach reached out to Cyprus Alum enquiring about possibly getting assistance with coaching the track team. In an initial meeting, the needs of the track team were discussed primarily involving the need for knowledgeable staff that could help with the coaching duties during the spring track season
Dan wrote a brief note and then sent it via Facebook to several Track Teammates who were at Cyprus during his time there. Those who responded were part of the core group of the Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track teams at Cyprus between 1990 and 1994. Several meetings happened with alumni and former Cyprus coach Earl Coombs. The Cyprus Administration was also consulted about the most effective options to help from outside the school district’s employees, before the first in person meeting of the group on June 24th, 2015. The needs were presented and discussed in the first meeting and ideas were fielded about how to approach a broad solution to help the team.
Those involved were eager to develop a long-term solution so that help could be provided to the coaches and teams for a longer period than just a single season or two. It became clear in the early process that the best help would be in an organization formally coordinating in close collaboration with the Cyprus coaches and Cyprus administration. The group understood from personal experience that it would be most effective to help create an environment that allowed a core group of Cyprus athletes who could transition easily across the Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track teams. During the 1990-1995 years, this was a critical aspect of the team bonds that existed. The group, now Cyprus Track XC, Inc. clearly demonstrates how much of a team bond existed. It is the stated goal of the group to help foster that.
In addition to helping the Cyprus teams, CTXC understands there is a large need for youth activities that promote exercise and teamwork. CTXC is heavily involved in helping the bring the USA Track & Field Run Jump Throw to the Magna area community and also in the process of restarting a Summer Youth Track Program that was robust in the 1980’s and 1990’s in Magna.
By August CTXC had obtained sanction and certification as an official USA Track & Field club organization able to work with youth, including passing initial background checks USATF requires for certified clubs to work with youth under the age of 18.
